Design Pay Gap
Part of Final Year Project - 2019
A short booklet to leave in design studios throughout University on the harsh facts about the pay gap for women in the design industry which we are not taught about. With pages for students to write thoughts on and display around the studio.
The booklet is A5 printed onto bright pink stock and saddle stitched together. 25 copies were given out and left around University. It features a perforated page that could be torn out and stuck up above a designer’s desk.
Using research and statistics from an article in It’s Nice That, I discovered that because the majority of design companies are classed as ‘micro companies’ they don’t have to file a pay gap report like bigger companies do so we will never know the full extent of the pay gap in design.
The aim of the zine was for it to be interactive for designers at UWE - to read and learn these pay gap facts. One of the pages has a perforated edge so can be torn out, written on and put up around our studio.
The feedback received from girls on my course was that it was quite shocking to read. “I’m about to graduate so I find these figures worrying”. “How is it fair that I can graduate with the same degree as a male on my course but will receive less opportunities than him just because I’m female?”
