Too Close
Part of Final Year Project - 2019
A campaign which tackles consent through subtle badges with a powerful messages regarding harassment. To be initially worn by women on nights out to help prevent unwanted contact but also applies to being harassed in other aspects of life.
Slogans such as “if you can read this you’re too close” were printed onto purple, red and white badges that glowed in the dark and provided to women in bars and clubs. General feedback was that they helped and weren't too invasive.
These badges were handed out to women in bars and clubs for them to wear for the remainder of their evening. This was done following a survey undertook about consent where the results showed that 100% of women asked said they had been made to feel uncomfortable in a bar/club and had also been touched without consent when out.
The badges have the phrases “if you can read this you’re too close”, “don’t touch” and “you don’t need to touch me”. When given to women they were attached to information cards with details on the campaign. They glow in the dark so that the slogans are visible but discreet and could be seen even in a dark nightclub.
The feedback was that they were very successful and a less aggressive way to address sexual harassment. Women explained how they didn’t want to “cause a scene” and ruin their night but did want a way to remind men to keep their hands to themselves.
