Protest the Gap

Part of Final Project - 2019

Using statistics about the pay gap in the UK this poster montage was made and walked through the streets of Bristol to provoke thought and to inform people with these figures that are usually not common knowledge.

Created with printed A4 yellow and off white posters collaged together onto an A1 board with inspiration from Guerrilla Girls. It was walked through Stokes Croft and Cabot Circus. People stopped to look and take photos and ask questions.

The current average gender pay gap in the UK is 17.9%. Some of the facts used in the posters are “at this rate of change it will take 100 years to remove the gender pay gap” and “the pay gap gets worse with age”. Whilst these facts are shocking they aren’t widely known. So the need for this project became important to help get these hidden statistics out to the public.

The response from this protest was that people were surprised and unaware how bad it was in the UK. People stopped, discussed and took photos so it was successful even if it made just a handful of people think about it. One quote was “I didn’t even know there was a pay gap in the UK”.
