Out on the Table
Feminist Archive Exhibition - 2018
Using material from the Feminist Archive South we produced a project about feminism and how issues have progressed. Out on The Table is a video with audio from our interview with Helen Taylor where we ate food and discussed topics in the same way she did with her group when fighting for women’s rights in Bristol in the 1970s.
We also created risograph postcards which we distributed around Bristol encouraging people to discuss feminism and how it has progressed. Our work featured in the exhibition and Helen Taylor and several of the other women from the movement came to view it. Collaborative project with Emma Gray, Nathan Day and Tom Astbury.
We met with feminist Helen Taylor and had a discussion about women studies, similar to the conversations the nine female authors of Half the Sky had. We spoke about whether the topics and issues addressed in the book were still relevant today and whether we have progressed enough.
We recorded this interview with Helen and created a film with visuals inspired by the idea of the meetings, where the women all had to bring an item of food and had a feast during their discussions.
Following our conversations, we created postcards which had a description about the book Half the Sky and questions on issues which are still relevant today. We then went back to Helen’s address and posted these postcards through her old letterbox and the other houses on the surrounding streets.
The postcards and film are to encourage women to generate more conversations about feminism, women’s position in society and the inequalities which are still around so that we can progress further and reduce inequality.
